School Age Child Caregiver
Program Description:
This curriculum is for students who want to acquire knowledge and skills for employment in out-of-school programs for children and youth such as before and after school services, youth groups, and summer camps. The curriculum provides a framework for understanding school-age programs, the development and behavior of school-age children, and child/family issues specific to out-of-school time programs. Students will gain practical knowledge and skills necessary for working in and managing out-of-school time programs for children 5 to 12 years of age. Students who achieve a grade of C or better in the school-age courses may apply the credits toward the TCC Child Development Associate Degree in Middle Childhood or any other TCC associate degree. See the TCC Child Development Associate in Science degrees for credits that may be applied toward university transfer degrees.
Entry Level Salary:
$15,250- $19,450
Local Employment Outlook:
Employment of child care workers is projected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2014. The number of women in the labor force of childbearing age (widely considered to be ages 15 to 44) and the number of children under 5 years of age are both expected to rise over the next 10 years. Also, the proportion of children being cared for exclusively by parents or other relatives is likely to continue to decline, spurring demand for additional child care workers. Concern about the behavior of school-aged children during non-school hours also should increase demand for before- and after-school programs and child care workers to staff them.
