Middle Childhood Caregiver

Program Description:
This degree plan is designed to prepare students to work with children in middle childhood. The curriculum is designed to provide a framework for understanding the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development of children five to twelve years of age. Students learn how to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs and activities for children in before and after school programs, child care and classrooms. Students gain practical knowledge and skills necessary for effective communication, teaching, guidance, and motivation of school age children as well as interacting with parents.

Entry Level Salary:
$34,640

Local Employment Outlook:
Employment of child care workers is projected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2014. The number of women in the labor force of childbearing age (widely considered to be ages 15 to 44) and the number of children under 5 years of age are both expected to rise over the next 10 years. Also, the proportion of children being cared for exclusively by parents or other relatives is likely to continue to decline, spurring demand for additional child care workers. Concern about the behavior of school-aged children during non-school hours also should increase demand for before- and after-school programs and child care workers to staff them.
